It’s hard to go almost anywhere during the Christmas season without hearing Christmas songs. These beautiful songs tell us about Christmas traditions such as roasting chestnuts on an open fire and remind us of the reason for the season with songs about Jesus lying away in a manager and herald angels singing. They’re all very lovely and calming. But do kids want to hear lovely and calming? No! They want fun, jolly and active. So, of course, kids love songs like “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” and “Frosty the Snowman.” But everyone knows those tunes. So how about some other Silly Christmas songs for kids? Here are three holiday songs sure to tickle your child’s funny bone.
This was my 5-year-old daughter’s favorite song last Christmas. This funny Christmas song tells the tale of how poor Santa put on the pounds and got stuck in a chimney. Santa’s reindeer have to come to the rescue by pushing, pulling, tugging and shoving St. Nick’s portly form until he gets free in this silly song kids will love.
This is an old song that kids still love. Originally recorded in 1953 by 10-yaer-old Gayla Peevey, the song became an instant holiday hit, peaking at number 24 on Billboard magazine’s pop chart in December 1953. The song, about a little girl who asks Santa to bring her a hippo for Christmas, inspired a local promoter to actually raise money and buy Gayla Peevey a real hippopotamus. The girl donate the hippo, named Matilda, to the city zoo, where it lived for about 50 years.
Kids who enjoy making “reindeer poop” from chocolate candy will love this song about a man who travels to the North Pole and discovers that reindeer poop is tasty. Those who have never made “reindeer poop” gifts may not understand the song too well, but kids who are familiar with the treat will get a kick out of the lyrics, especially if you play this song while preparing bags of “reindeer poop.”
